Random House Book Cover Competition

I chose the book of Animal Farm because out of all the books I am most familiar with the characters and the themes in which George Orwell subverting the history and philosophy of Russian Communism, whilst exposing its flaws and contradictions through the setting of a plain farmyard.

My goal was to illustrate a book cover that brings focus to aspects of the book that are important, without giving too much of the plot away and not overstating Orwell’s comparison towards communism for new or unfamiliar readers.

Above Left: Concept sketch exploring the composition whilst including the individual motifs in book.

Above Right: Ink test for clouds. Whilst I wasn't happy with the overall look of the cloud. I was able to use textures from the drawing and composite elements for the book in Photoshop.

Bottom Left and Right: Final Ink Drawings of the windmill and fence from 'Animal Farm'. Both of these are important plot points in the book so I felt is was important to show these in the final book.
